Dutch company U-Boat Worx has upped the ante for boat charter and made it possible to rent, you guessed it, a personal submarine. Geography unimportant, the manufacturer gives you a choice of two submersibles – the C-Quester or C-Explorer – giving enthusiasts, tour operators and scientists alike the chance to buy the freedom to discover what lies beneath.
Charlotte Schroots from U-Boat Worx says, “Clients can go on their own personal quest or simply enjoy the underwater scenery and aquatic life. Many have already chartered the submersible together with their own yacht; they feel like real explorers when they are diving on unexplored sites 100 metres below the surface.” Professional researchers and offshore companies are also amongst U-Boat Worx’s client portfolio – after all submersibles are a rather expensive gadget making flexible charter a far more cost-effective alternative.
Where the C-Quester or C-Explorer gain ground over traditional SCUBA diving is that passengers can reach greater depths, stay underwater for extended periods of time and they don’t even have to get wet. The environment is dry, relaxed, comfortable and surprisingly spacious. In addition, unlike SCUBA, there are neither pressure issues to contend with nor the need for any specialist training and certificates.
When you’re ready to book your submarine charter, U-Boat Worx will arrange the crew, all necessary support equipment, transportation to the desired destination and also accessories such as high-def cameras, lighting and advanced tracking systems. The Company can also suggest some tried-and-tested itineraries for those clients who are unfamiliar with the underwater world. Then all that remains is to pick the sub to suit your mission.
Option one is the C-Explorer 2. A two-person submersible with a full 360º transparent pressure hull, the C-Explorer 2 gives its occupants the best unobstructed view possible. Meanwhile the C-Quester 3 is a three-man submersible based on a double-hull concept making it very robust and efficient. Both vessels have a maximum operating depth of 100 metres and, for comfort, are equipped with a powerful air conditioning system. The state-of-the-art lithium ion batteries that power both subs pack enough energy to dive for up to six hours at one time whilst emitting a perfect zero pollution into our precious oceans.
So what’s the small print? Well, given that U-Boat Worx is prepared to deliver your charter submarine all over the world, the minimum rental duration is one month – although there is no maximum. They’ll supply you with one pilot and a surface-based officer, the necessary insurance plus a battery charger station to fill her up – all included in the price. Transport to destination and a support boat will cost you extra, but maybe you can supply your own version of the latter.
Founded in 2005, U-Boat Worx has become one of the world’s largest manufacturers and designers of small submersibles. Each meets the highest possible safety standards. Visit www.uboatworx.com
